Storyline

A musical journey through Brazil in the company of Finnish filmmaker Mika Kaurismäki. Kaurismäki’s road movie is both a record of the multifarious, multicultural rhythms and forms of expression in Brazilian music as well as a testimony to Kaurismäki’s personal passion. During the course of a 4,000 kilometre journey of discovery across the country he has known so well for the past decade, Kaurismäki meets musicians, singers and dancers who are proponents of a wide variety of different styles. Kaurismäki allows Brazil’s rich musical tradition to speak for itself – in stories told by the people of Brazil, in amazingly contradictory styles of music and in song lyrics.Music is an inherent part of everyday life in Brazil and is, moreover, always used as a spontaneous expression of emotion. As Mika Kaurismäki comments: “Brazil is definitely a country with one of the richest musical traditions. Most people outside Brazil are only familiar with rhythms such as the bossa nova or the samba; but there is so much more to discover – such as the maracatú, the frevo, the coco, the forró, the embolada and many other styles of music. The influence of the music of the indigenous Indio population as well as African, European – particularly Portugese – Arab and other types of music have contributed to this incredible variety of musical expression.”
