Storyline

The history of Ukraine and its domination by its neighbour Russia, has repeated itself over the centuries. But in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine won independence.

In 2004, the ‘Orange Revolution’ ended the existing authoritarian pro-Russian regime. Led by opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and her ally Viktor Yushchenko, citizens packed the streets of Ukraine in protest at rigged elections. The Supreme Court ruled in their favour, and the Orange alliance took power with a firmly pro-Western, anti-Russian platform.

In the aftermath of the Revolution, there were many who predicted a domino-type wave of revolutions that would bring democracy and liberalisation to the region. These predictions never came true. In 2010, with the election of President Yanukovich, the largest country in central Europe once again came under the Russian sphere of influence.

Dwelling mainly on the last 30 years, this film is the story of a nation, its geopolitical importance in central Europe, and its continuing struggle for democracy.
