Storyline
Castelcuto is a sleepy little town on the Sicilian coast. The Second World War is about to break out.Malèna is the town’s beauty. The eyes of all the men in town follow her wherever she goes. Every step she takes is a spectacle, followed by the spiteful wagging of jealous wives’ tongues. Thirteen-year-old Renato has also fallen for Malèna’s charms and has an adolescent crush on her. He is incapable of taking his eyes off her, even for a moment and secretly watches everything she does. Malèna lives on her own since her husband went off to fight in the war. Not long after his departure she receives news that he is missing and is believed to be dead. Now at last the path is clear for all the men of the town to make a play for the woman they have lusted after for so long . . . Malèna is defenceless against the constant advances of the townsmen, all in hot pursuit of their prey; meanwhile, however, the women of the town all gang up against her.The situation escalates and, after the war, having been made an outcast, tormented and humiliated by all and sundry, Malèna is finally forced to leave the town. Then, just when it seems that all has been lost, Renato finally plucks up the courage to help Malèna . . .
